Sand Mound, rail and a spelling slip
Grand Mound is named for a nearby Sand Mound, and a recording error produced the spelling. The Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad was built through the townsite in 1858, with a depot. The town was platted in 1866.
Downtown still has the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank and Dugan’s Saloon. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places. A brick building from 1905 stands there too. Immanuel Lutheran Church and a town park are close.
