Toronto, Iowa was platted in 1853 by George W. Thorne, who had built a sawmill and gristmill here in the 1840s. Thorne was born in England and raised in Toronto, Ontario, which is where the village got its name. The Calamus-Wheatland Community School District serves it.
The Wapsipinicon River runs close to town, and Walnut Grove Park sits next to the village. St. James Catholic Church, white frame with a bell tower out front, stands in the village. County roads lead out to US 30 at Wheatland and IA 136 at Lost Nation.
