US 61, the caves and the old downtown
US 61 adjoins the city and carries traffic between Dubuque and the Quad Cities. IA 62 and IA 64 also pass through town. A four-lane US 61 bypass opened around 1967 and moved traffic and shops off Main Street to the west side.
Maquoketa Caves State Park is a few miles northwest, and the city sits on the Maquoketa River. A 2008 fire burned a large part of the Victorian downtown. The Clinton Engines Museum and the 61 Drive-in are also around town. A new hospital opened in 2019.
